Meet Juliana, a WA Training Awards(opens in a new tab) finalist and recent graduate of the SIT50322 Diploma of Event Management at North Metropolitan TAFE's Northbridge campus. She chose TAFE International WA for its practical approach, combining theoretical knowledge with hands on industry experience. In this interview, Juliana shares insights about her journey, work placements, and her exciting nomination for ‘International Student of the Year.’
What campus are you located at and what course are you studying? Why did you choose to study at TAFE International WA?
I completed the SIT50322 Diploma of Event Management at North Metropolitan's Northbridge campus. I chose to study at TAFE International WA due to its reputation and the balanced mix of theoretical and practical experience it offers. The opportunity to gain hands on experience while learning from industry experts was also a key factor in my decision.
What were the best things about your course? How do you plan to use this qualification for your future career?
One of my goals in studying abroad was to engage not only with my field of study but also with Australian culture. Having Australian lecturers greatly enhanced my understanding of the local culture and its nuances. I was pleasantly surprised to find that these lecturers became significant mentors, offering me invaluable insights beyond theoretical knowledge. Their expertise and up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, coupled with the practical work experience they provided throughout the course, made a substantial difference in my ability to adapt and contribute to the industry. I aspire to become an events professional in Western Australia, and I am confident that this training has set a strong foundation for my career. The practical assessments and real-life event experiences enriched my learning, significantly developed my skills, and supported me in securing my first job in my industry.
You recently have been nominated as a finalist in the ‘International Student of the Year’ category at the WA Training Awards,(opens in a new tab) do you have advice for other students who are striving to become a finalist?
Being nominated as a finalist in the ‘International Student of the Year’ category at the WA Training Awards 2024 is an incredible and unforgettable honour. It has deepened my connection to my educational journey and affirmed that all the hard work and challenges of being an international student are truly worthwhile. For those aspiring to become a finalist, my advice is to actively participate in campus activities, cultural events, and community service. Such involvement can significantly enrich your experience and highlight your dedication and impact. Beyond that, the most important thing is to stay true to yourself, embrace your journey, and believe in your unique story. Your individuality and experiences make your story special, and only you can share it with the world.
Did you undertake work placement as part of your course? How do you feel completing your course will help your career?
I had several valuable work experience opportunities throughout my course. These ranged from planning and executing events with cultural and community significance to volunteering at various industry events, including business conferences and fundraising gala dinners. The hands on experience I gained from these activities was invaluable and could not have been acquired through textbooks alone. I am deeply grateful to my lecturers for facilitating these opportunities, as they significantly enhanced my learning and prepared me for a successful career in event management. These experiences have not only broadened my practical skills but also deepened my understanding of the industry, giving me a solid foundation to build my career upon.
How have you found the facilities on your campus? What are the best things about your lecturers and teaching style?
The Northbridge campus is super close to the train station and to the city centre, so it was very easy to get there and around during my studies. The events management classrooms are well equipped with desktops, which was very convenient as it meant I didn’t have to bring my own device to every class. This was especially helpful on days when I went straight to work after class. There are also canteens where students can have lunch, and the campus offers kitchen facilities so I could bring my own food whenever I wanted.
To sum up, the lecturers were consistently respectful and inclusive, ensuring that international students felt welcomed and integrated. They frequently shared their personal experiences and insights into Australian culture, enriching the learning experience. The blend of practical training and cultural context provided by the lecturers greatly enhanced my education and understanding of the industry and Australian culture. Furthermore, the campus hosts a Jobs & Skills Centre (opens in a new tab)that offers valuable support for students seeking roles in their industry. This resource was extremely important to me and added considerable value to my overall experience.
How does life in Australia compare to home? What are some fun activities you’ve been enjoying in your free time?
I come from São Paulo, Brazil, and when I decided to study abroad, I was eager to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life. Western Australia has provided the perfect environment for me to live a healthy, balanced life, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. I’m continually amazed by WA’s endless blue beaches, breathtaking national parks, and nearly constant blue skies.
Over the past 1.5 years, I’ve met incredibly kind and welcoming people who have shown genuine interest in my story and helped me connect with the community. Western Australia truly feels like a piece of heaven; its unique natural beauty and almost untouched beaches quickly became a part of my everyday life.
Have you found a job?
I’ve found the work and study life balance I was searching for, which has allowed me to build friendships with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds - connections I might not have made back home. Very often, my friends and I enjoy cultural events, dining out, and dancing together. I’ve also taken up bushwalking, swimming, and even hand painting at home in my free time. WA has truly exceeded my expectations, providing a wonderful backdrop for both personal growth and enjoyable experiences.
Is there anything else you would like to share? Do you have advice for future students from your home country that are considering studying abroad at TIWA?
One of the most important things I’ve learned during my time here is the value of embracing new experiences with an open mind. For students from Brazil or anywhere else considering studying abroad at TIWA, my advice would be to fully immerse yourself in the local culture and take every opportunity to connect with people. Western Australia is a welcoming state with a vibrant community, and TIWA offers many opportunities to get involved in local activities and events that will enrich your experience. Additionally, remember that the journey of studying abroad is as much about personal growth as it is about academic achievement. Be open to meeting people from different backgrounds and learning from them; these interactions can provide invaluable insights and friendships that last a lifetime.
