I’m Jaira, an international student from the Philippines. I graduated and got my bachelor’s degree in biology a couple of years back, and made my way into the professional workforce, where I hopped from the food science industry to education for three years, making a living but not feeling “alive”. I have always loved animals, which is why I pursued a biology degree in the first place, but the reality is, a career in the animal industry is simply just unrealistic in my country— at least if you only have a bachelor's degree. After saving up some money, I decided to go back to school, with my mind on a master’s qualification in either marine biology or zoology. Around the same time, I had multiple friends recommend studying abroad, and as I’ve always spoken about wanting to do that one day. A couple of seminars and some consultations with visa agents later, I found myself on a plane to Perth!
What course are you studying, and at which TAFE campus?
I am currently enrolled at Bentley campus in the ACM30122 Certificate III in Animal Care Services, with plans to proceed to the ACM40418 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. As a person who learns through experience, I love how hands-on the training is, with knowledgeable lecturers there to guide me through very practical lessons. And of course, I love how I’m able to interact and care for a multitude of animals, from cats and dogs to reptiles and birds.
What career path are you planning to pursue after completing your studies at TAFE?
I’m hoping to jump straight into the veterinary care industry after my studies. Fortunately, I was able to find a job in animal care services about two months after I arrived onshore, so I’ve already taken a small step through the door.
How long have you been living in Perth?
I arrived in Perth in early January 2025, so I’ve been onshore a little over five months now. I love how vibrant and peaceful Perth is, with lots of free activities around like walking in the beautiful parks or swimming at beaches.
Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course similar to yours at TAFE?
Animal care is a truly fun and fulfilling course, especially if you have a passion for animals. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ask for help. TAFE really shines when you are a hands-on or visual learner, so I would recommend it for students who can’t keep still for long periods of classroom time, or even those that simply prefer to be in a simulated work environment.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Take the leap! The concept of moving away from home and into a wide and foreign continent is daunting, but I assure you that the second you step into this beautiful land, you won’t look back. The places and people are truly some of the best in the world, and I know I haven’t regretted my choice to study here for a minute.
