Lismar from Colombia has the right tools for Engineering

My name is Lismar Alvear and I'm from Colombia. I moved to Perth in February 2023 to study English. Before coming here, I was living in Colombia and working as an engineer for an international company. I had always wanted to study abroad and gain experience in another country, and Perth seemed like the perfect place to do that.

What course are you studying, and at which TAFE campus?

In 2024, I studied the diploma and this year, I’m doing the MEM60122 Advanced Diploma of Engineering at Carlisle campus. What I like most about the course is how experienced the lecturers are, and how much hands-on learning we get to do. The course lets us go deep into technical topics while also building real skills for the industry. It’s also been great studying alongside other international students. The program is well known and respected by local employers, which really helps when looking for job opportunities.

How have you found the facilities on your campus so far?

The Carlisle campus has everything you need as a student, modern classrooms, all the right tools, and access to advanced software. What I enjoy most is how the lecturers bring their industry experience into the classroom. They’ve worked in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) field in Australia and really know what’s expected out there. They often use real-world examples, and we get to work on simulated projects, which helps us get ready for actual jobs in the industry.

What career path are you planning to pursue after completing your studies at TAFE?

My goal is to continue growing as an HVAC professional here in Australia. Thanks to TAFE and the reputation this course has, I’ve already started working part-time in an HVAC design company while I study. That opportunity helped me gain local experience and apply what I’m learning in class to real projects. I’m hoping to keep building on that after I finish my advanced diploma.

How long you have been living in Perth?

I’ve been living in Perth since 2023, so just over two years now. It’s a beautiful city with a relaxed lifestyle and so many amazing places to explore. Honestly, the sunsets here are unforgettable. People are very welcoming and supportive, which has made it much easier to settle in as an international student.

Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course similar to yours at TAFE?

If you're thinking about studying HVAC, I’d 100% recommend doing the diploma and advanced diploma at TAFE. The course is well structured, the quality of teaching is high, and TAFE has a great reputation. Just a few months after I started, I was already making connections and managed to find a part-time role in the industry. That wouldn’t have been possible without the course and the support I received from my lecturers.
