Daniel George is an international student from India. He's currently studying SIT50422 Diploma of Hospitality Management at Bentley campus. In this article, Daniel shares his experience at TAFE International Western Australia and offers his advice to students considering studying cookery or tourism.

What you were doing before moving to Perth as an international student?

Before moving to Perth as an international student, I completed my year 12 studies at home in India. Coming to Australia was a big step for me, as I wanted to explore new opportunities in the culinary industry and gain hands on experience in a professional kitchen environment. My passion for cooking and desire to grow in this field motivated me to pursue formal training in commercial cookery, and I’m excited about the journey ahead in the hospitality industry.

What course are you studying?

I am currently studying the SIT50422 Diploma of Hospitality Management at Bentley campus. This course has been an incredible experience, allowing me to develop both practical cooking skills and develop a deep understanding of the hospitality industry.

One of the best things about the course is the hands on training in a professional kitchen, where I get to refine my techniques and experiment with different cuisines. The industry-experienced trainers provide valuable insights, and the collaborative learning environment makes it even more engaging. This program has not only strengthened my culinary foundation but it has also prepared me for a dynamic and rewarding career in the hospitality industry.

How have you found the facilities on your campus so far?

Studying at Bentley campus has been a great experience, thanks to its modern campus and well-equipped facilities. The practical kitchens provide a real-world cooking environment, helping me refine my skills with professional equipment. The trainers are student-friendly and highly experienced, always willing to guide and share their industry knowledge. I really enjoy the interactive classes, where we not only learn theory but also get hands on training and simulated work experiences. This approach makes learning engaging and prepares us for real kitchen challenges in the hospitality industry

What career path are you planning to pursue after completing your studies at TIWA?

After completing my studies at TIWA, I plan to build a career in the hospitality industry, primarily as a chef. I am passionate about creating exceptional culinary experiences and look forward to working in dynamic kitchen environments. Alongside my interest in cooking, I am also drawn to event management, as I enjoy the process of organising and delivering memorable dining experiences. My goal is to gain hands on experience in both fields and explore opportunities that combine my skills in the kitchen with my passion for hospitality and event planning.

What are the best things about Perth as an international student?

I have been living in Perth for nearly two years, and it has been an amazing experience. As an international student, I love

the pleasant climate, diverse food scene, and the opportunity to meet people from different cultures. The city has a great balance between a relaxed lifestyle and vibrant urban life, making it a comfortable and exciting place to live. Perth is also very student-friendly, with plenty of opportunities to grow both personally and professionally in the hospitality industry.

Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course similar to yours at TIWA?

If you’re considering studying commercial cookery or hospitality at TIWA, I’d say you are at the right place! The hands on training and guidance from experienced trainers will help you build strong skills and confidence in the industry. The best part is that you can immediately apply what you learn in real work environments, making you more professional and job-ready. I would definitely recommend my college to family and friends because of its quality training, industry-experienced instructors, and practical learning approach, which truly prepares students for success in the hospitality field.
