I’m Janvi Shah from Kenya. Before moving to Perth, I finished my A-levels and then worked for a while at a wholesale warehouse and at an eye clinic. After that, I decided to take the next step to come to Perth for my studies.
What course are you studying?
I am currently studying the 52873WA Advanced Diploma of Civil and Structural Engineering at East Perth campus. What I enjoy most is the balance between hands-on, practical learning and the strong industry relevance of the course. The teachers are supportive, and their real-world experience makes the lessons much more engaging. On top of that, I’ve made lifelong friends who feel like family and having that support network has made my TAFE experience even more memorable and rewarding.
How are the facilities on your campus?
The facilities on campus are excellent, modern, well-equipped, and designed to support hands-on learning, which really helps in understanding the practical side of engineering. What I enjoy most about my lecturers is their supportive approach and the way they bring real-world industry experience into the classroom. Their teaching style combines practical training with real-world simulations, making the learning both engaging
and highly relevant. There’s also a strong focus on teamwork and communication skills, which has not only prepared me for real workplace situations but also helped strengthen the friendships I’ve made throughout the course.
Looking ahead—what’s next for you?
Looking ahead, I’m aiming to build a career in civil and structural engineering, with a focus on contributing to projects that make a real difference in communities such as sustainable infrastructure and innovative structural designs. My goal is to gain industry experience, continue developing my skills, and eventually work towards becoming a chartered professional engineer. I’m excited about the opportunities this pathway offers, from working on major projects to creating solutions that support both people and the environment.
How long have you been in Perth?
I’ve been in Perth since January 2024. What I really enjoy here as an international student is the beautiful weather, the ocean, and the many hiking opportunities. Perth also offers a safe, welcoming environment with a strong international student community, which makes it easy to settle in and balance both studies and lifestyle.
Do you have any advice for future students?
My advice for anyone considering a course like mine at TAFE is to be prepared to engage in practical, hands-on learning. The courses are designed to build both technical knowledge and industry-ready skills, which is very valuable. I would definitely recommend TAFE to family and friends back in Kenya because of the supportive lecturers, the diversity of students, and the focus on real-world applications.
It’s a great choice for those who want to study in a welcoming environment while preparing for strong career opportunities.
Anything else you would like to share?
I’d just add that Perth is a wonderful place to study and live you get to meet great people, enjoy diverse food and culture, and really make the most of your time here.
