My name is Florence Gombe. Before moving to Perth, I was living in Zambia where I completed my secondary education. I’ve always had a strong interest in how machines work, especially in the automotive and energy sectors, which led me to pursue mechanical engineering. Coming to Australia as an international student was a big step for me, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Which course did you choose?
I studied the MEM60122 Advanced Diploma of Engineering [Mechanical] at Munster campus. One of the best things about the course is the balance between theory and practical work. We don’t just sit in classrooms — we get to use real tools, software, and equipment, which prepares us for what to expect in industry.
How have you found the facilities on your campus so far?
The facilities at the campus are excellent — the workshops and computer laboratories are well-equipped and always accessible. What I enjoy most about the lecturers is their experience and how they bring real-world examples into our learning. They are always supportive and encourage us to think like engineers through hands-on activities and simulated work environments.
What career path are you planning to pursue?
I am looking forward to working in the mining industry. Mechanical engineers play a vital role in maintaining and improving heavy machinery and systems used in mining operations. I’m especially interested in applying my knowledge to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability within this field. Working in the mines would give me a chance to grow my technical skills in a dynamic and challenging environment.
How long have you been living in Perth?
I’ve been living in Perth for almost three years now, and I really love the calm and welcoming environment. As an international student, Perth feels safe, diverse, and easy to settle into. The lifestyle here allows me to focus on my studies while still enjoying nature, city life, and cultural experiences.
Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course like yours at TAFE?
For anyone considering studying mechanical engineering at TAFE, I would highly recommend it. The course is very practical and industry-focused, and the support from staff is incredible. It’s a great place to build a strong foundation for your future career. I would definitely recommend TAFE to my friends and family.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Studying at TAFE has opened many doors for me, not just academically but also personally. I’ve grown more confident, independent, and inspired to achieve more in the engineering field. I’m grateful for this journey and excited for what’s ahead.
