Which campus are you studying at?
I’m currently studying the SIT30821 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at Central Regional TAFE, Kalgoorlie. The TAFE administration advised me about the $5,000 regional bursary package available to international students and they mentioned that I should apply.
How have you enjoyed the course so far?
I commenced this course in January, 2023. It’s been good and I’m enjoying this course so much because it provides hands-on practical experience needed for building my career and it’s allowing me to progress to a higher level of qualification. I feel like this course is my calling.
My family and I have a small business back home in the Philippines. The knowledge I acquire from this course will be used to develop and grow our small business into a much bigger and successful one.
How have you found the facilities at Kalgoorlie campus?
I like how the facility is designed. I like the practical and live training in the kitchen. The lecturers and chefs teach us assessments and theory. The lecturers also help us to improve ourselves today and into the future. The lecturer always makes sure that he delivers his best so that we learn a lot from him.
What I also appreciate is that the lecturer treats every student the same and ensures that every student is doing the right thing. He makes sure that his students are doing ok and that we’re not having any problems because this will affect our performance.
I have also noticed that whenever someone is late or not in the classroom, he will call his student and wait outside of the classroom. He wants to make sure everyone will learn a new topic at the same time and they don’t miss any tutorials as it will affect their experience in the practical training.
How long have you been living in Kalgoorlie?
I have been living here since June 2022. The life here is so much different from my home country. I found that people here in Australia are more polite and kind, they also embrace equality between different cultures, ages, races, and genders. I am enjoying my free time to visit parks and the museums in my region and exploring new things.
Have you found a part-time job?
Yes I have. I have enjoyed it very much and I’m having fun working in the kitchen. I’ve learned a lot of things. I also get to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve learned from school into my work.
Would you recommend the regional bursary to other students?
Yes, I would recommend the regional bursary because it’s a big help for international students. It offers essential financial assistance, making it possible to complete more studies.
