Caring with purpose: Shannen’s nursing education at TAFE

Hi, my name is Shannen Ann Marie Legaspi and I am 20 years old from the province of Bulacan in the Philippines. When I was young, my parents worked abroad as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and I grew up with my beloved grandmother who took care of us. She sadly passed away last year due to medical complications and during those times when she was sick, it was my turn to take care of her. Because of this, I was motivated to pursue health-related studies abroad and it led me to nursing. I was a fresh graduate of high school when I arrived here in Australia.

What course are you studying, and at which TAFE campus?

I am currently studying the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing at McLarty Avenue campus. I love the welcoming environment of TAFE because I met amazing people—friends, colleagues, and lecturers—who became my safe space. I was very nervous at first when I stepped inside the campus since everything was a new experience, but with them, I feel at ease.

How are the facilities on your campus?

The facilities are clean and well-maintained, especially the equipment in the simulation ward at the laboratory. Aside from that, the materials we used gave us a chance to have a hands-on practical training that is similar to the real hospital settings. The TAFE lecturers supported us as they give us useful tips and guide us with their expertise and work experience that were very helpful.

Looking ahead—what’s next for you?

After finishing my studies, I plan to work as an enrolled nurse in a hospital. I want to gain more clinical experience and further develop my skills in patient care. I also want to help more people and alleviate their pain. My long-term goal is to specialise in a specific area like medical surgical nursing, but right now, I also want to explore different areas first. In the future, I want to continue my education and become a registered nurse.

How long have you been in Perth?

I have been here in Perth for about one and a half years already. There are lots of things I love about Perth and one of that is how accessible everything is when it comes to transportation and the beautiful beaches. The food is so good, especially the pastries and coffee! Also, the community is very welcoming and very safe, which made my experience here enjoyable.

Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course like yours at TAFE?

My only advice is to "keep going and try new things" because we will always try to figure out things in life. Figuring things out and asking questions is not a sign of weakness but it is a key to open the doors to opportunities. With TAFE, I learn how to improve my skills and become better. Lecturers will not only help you gain more knowledge but they will also enhance your skills to be industry-ready so I would definitely recommend TAFE to everyone.
