Building a future abroad: Patrick’s mechanical mission in Perth

My name is Patrick Ramer Pastrana, but everyone calls me Patrick. I’m 24 years old. I’m an easy-going person, a bit stubborn (in a good way), and a dreamer. I was studying in my home country the Philippines, and I enjoyed spending time with my friends and family. I was a full-time student back home but I had a dream to explore various countries while gaining knowledge and enjoying different cultures.

What course did you choose?

I studied the MEM60122 Advanced Diploma of Engineering [Mechanical] at Munster campus. The best thing about my course is that I have gained practical experience using power tools and turning ideas to reality. Seeing the projects we’ve built together with classmates makes me proud and excited.

How have you found the facilities on your campus so far?

I really do enjoy the practical training and environment. I also enjoy the lecturers as they are easy going and making sure that we are learning at the same time they also make sure that our materials and tools are working properly and are highly maintained.

What career path are you planning to pursue?

After completing my studies I’m looking to work at engineering companies. I hope to apply and improve the values and knowledge I have learned at TAFE.

How long you have been living in Perth?

I have been living in Perth for more than two years, it’s interesting and I can’t believe that I have learnt so much while here.  For me the most interesting experience as an international student was when I stayed for a couple of days at Rottnest Island. It was a magical experience.

Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course similar to yours at TAFE?

I recommend TAFE as a great starting point for studying, especially if you're planning to go to university. TAFE helps you gain the knowledge and skills you need, and it prepares you both mentally and physically for university life. We all know that university can be expensive, unlike TAFE. But earning a certificate from TAFE can also help you land a decent job by showing your qualifications. TAFE focuses on hands-on and practical experience, and the facilities are excellent. The professors often come from top universities and have professional experience, which helps you improve and enhance your skills and knowledge.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

One more thing I would like to share is that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Thank you.
