Pixels, passion, and Perth: Exploring game art through Kyle’s eyes

My name is Kyle Wilson, I'm 21 and originally from the Bahamas. Before moving to Australia, I worked in retail while pursuing my passion as a digital Illustrator. I came to Perth for the first time to visit my brother, and that trip changed everything, I discovered the Game and Animation course and instantly felt inspired. It was the perfect fit for me being interested in making concept art for games. Studying here has truly transformed my life and opened exciting new possibilities for my future.

What course are you studying?

I'm studying CUA51020 Diploma of Screen and Media Animation & Game Art. What I’ve enjoyed most is getting to create characters, animate scenes, and build game 3D assets from scratch. The teachers have been incredibly supportive and always available. My most memorable experience was being able to attend Pixel Expo with my mates and connect with other industry professionals.

How are the facilities on your campus?

They have a few dedicated rooms with huge drawing tablets and dual monitor screens, which feel like an actual studio. What I appreciated about the lecturers is that they always communicate and try to guide you the best way possible. They were very hands on and gave practical projects that felt like studio work, sometimes really challenging but they help during roadblocks and give valuable tips.

Looking ahead—what’s next for you?

In the next 3 to 5 years, I see myself working professionally as a junior illustrator or concept artist on a creative team – ideally at a studio like Riot Games or an indie game studio. Right now, I’m focused on strengthening my fundamentals and building a portfolio that reflects
both technical skill and artistic skills. TAFE has helped me with that, and I'm excited to keep learning more skills and capture more opportunities.

How long you have been in Perth?

I’ve been in Perth for one year.  As an international student, I’ve really enjoyed how laidback the city is. The pace is relaxed, most people are friendly, and there’s a great balance between nature and city life. I’ve had the chance to travel with my brother and try different things such as Korean BBQ, archery, bowling and more. Plus, the creative community here is expanding, which makes it exciting for someone in games and animation. The friends I've made here make it worthwhile.

What do you wish you knew before coming to Perth to study?

Before coming to Perth, I'd make sure to have enough money saved and budget accordingly. From my experience, connecting with others — who you know here can lead to greater opportunities Also to have extra equipment such as a hard-drive, laptop in case you must do after schoolwork.

For anyone considering a course like mine, I’d say: be ready to learn by doing. The course is very hands-on, so the more you experiment and ask questions, the more you’ll understand-especially for 3D modelling and rigging as the course goes on, but no need to worry because they will be there to guide you.

I’d recommend my college to family and friends. The teachers are supportive, the facilities are solid, and the projects feel like real industry experience. It’s a great place to build your skills and improve your work.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I’d just like to say how grateful I am for the experience – it’s helped me grow creatively and professionally. TAFE has given me the confidence to pursue a career I’m passionate about. I couldn't have made it here without my friends & family, especially my brother's support.
