"Just go for it" - Marian's advice to future students

What you were doing before moving to Perth as an international student?

I’m MJ from the Philippines. Back in the Philippines, I studied Professional Culinary Arts, and I’ve always dreamed of becoming a professional chef and owning my own restaurant someday. That dream is what inspired me to pursue further studies, starting with SIT30821 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery and now continuing with the diploma level.

Moving to Perth was a big decision, but I was excited about the opportunities and the bustling student life. I've always wanted to study abroad in order to immerse myself in various cuisine, cultures, expand my knowledge and improve my skills. So far, it's been an incredible learning experience, and I'm thoroughly enjoying getting to know the city and meeting people from all over the world.

What are the best things about your course?

I am currently studying the SIT50422 Diploma of Hospitality Management at Bentley campus. One of the best things about this course is how hands on it is—there’s a great balance between theory and practical training. We get real experience working in a commercial training kitchen as a chef and the training restaurant as a restaurant manager, which really helps build our skills and confidence.

Another highlight is getting to meet industry professionals through career recruitment events. These opportunities allow us to connect with people already working in the hospitality industry, gain insights, and even explore potential job opportunities. It’s a great way to get a feel for the real world of hospitality while still studying.

How have you found the facilities on your campus?

What I enjoy most about the lecturers is their teaching style. They’re very experienced and supportive, and they focus a lot on hands on, practical training. They’re always willing to give advice whenever we need it, which really helps us grow.

They don’t just teach from a textbook they share real-life industry insights, experience and guide us through tasks as if we’re already managing a restaurant. The simulated work environment helps build our confidence and really prepares us for what it’s like to work in the hospitality industry.

What career path are you planning to pursue after completing your studies at TIWA?

After completing my studies at TAFE, I plan to pursue a career as a professional chef and gain as much experience and knowledge as possible. My ultimate goal is to open my own restaurant one day, where I can share my passion for food and create unique dining experiences for people.

I want to continue building my skills in a real kitchen, explore different types of cuisine, and work my way up in the industry. Every step I take brings me closer to that dream.

What are the best things about Perth as an international student?

I’ve been living in Perth for almost two years now, and it’s been such a great and amazing student journey. I’ve had the chance to make new friends from different nationalities, learn about other cultures, and also discover more about myself along the way.

Perth is a very welcoming and diverse city, which makes it easier to settle in as an international student. The community, the relaxed lifestyle, and the opportunities to grow both personally and professionally have all made this experience really special for me.

Would you recommend your college to family and friends?

For students considering a course like mine, my advice is to just go for it—especially if you’re passionate about hospitality or cookery. Cooking is a never-ending learning experience, and this course truly prepares you for success in the industry. Every day brings new lessons, and you’ll constantly be learning and improving your skills. Don’t be afraid to try new things, step out of your comfort zone, and always seek opportunities for growth.

I would definitely recommend TAFE to my family and friends. It’s a great choice because it offers real-world experience, a welcoming environment, and strong support—especially for international students.

The training at TAFE is very hands on, the facilities are industry-standard, and the lecturers are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. They guide you as if you’re already working in a real kitchen, which really helps build your confidence and prepares you for life in the hospitality industry.

You’ll also have the opportunity to meet industry professionals who will inspire and mentor you along the way. TAFE is a place where you can grow, discover more about your potential, and be supported to become the best version of yourself—not just as a student, but as a future professional in the hospitality industry.
