Healing through service: Reign's mission in Australia

I’m Reign Frances Jabagat Tidalgo, a student from the Philippines. I am deeply passionate about community services and health care because I believe everyone deserves care, respect, and support to improve their quality of life. Studying health care is important to me as it equips me with the knowledge and practical skills to make a positive impact on individuals and communities in need. My early life was spent in hospitals undergoing surgeries and working with speech therapists due to being born with a cleft lip and palate. The care and support I received from medical and community professionals deeply inspired me. Their kindness and dedication sparked my passion to pursue a career in community services and nursing. Studying in Australia allows me to gain world-class education in this field, preparing me to serve vulnerable populations effectively, both here and in my home country.

What course are you studying?

I completed the CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services at the Murdoch campus in Semester 1, 2025, and am now studying the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing at the Mt Lawley campus. What I appreciated most about studying community services was the strong focus on practical skills and real-world experience, which helped me develop a deeper understanding of how to support individuals and communities effectively.

At the Mt Lawley campus for my nursing course, I’ve found the facilities to be excellent and very supportive of my learning. The nursing labs are modern, spacious, and well-equipped, creating a realistic environment that allows us to practise essential clinical skills safely and confidently. The overall campus atmosphere is welcoming and encourages collaboration among students, which makes studying here even more enjoyable.

What I enjoy most about my lecturers at Mt Lawley campus is their approachable and hands-on teaching style. They combine theory with practical sessions, often using simulations and real-life scenarios that help us apply what we learn in a meaningful way. Their passion for nursing and patient care is truly motivating, and it inspires me to work hard and grow both personally and professionally.

What career path are you planning to pursue?

After completing my studies at TAFE, I plan to pursue a career in nursing, with the goal of working in a hospital or community healthcare setting. I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to provide direct patient care and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Over time, I hope to gain experience in different areas of nursing such as aged care, mental health, or community health to discover where I can best contribute.
In the future, I also hope to apply the knowledge and experience I gain in Australia to contribute to healthcare services in the Philippines, where I can support my community and help improve access to quality care. My long-term goal is to continue my education and eventually become a registered nurse, building on the strong foundation and practical experience I have gained at TAFE.

How long have you been living in Perth?

I have been living in Perth since September last year. One of the best things about Perth as an international student is its friendly and welcoming community, which makes it easier to adapt and feel at home. The city offers a safe and clean environment, with plenty of parks and outdoor spaces where I can relax and enjoy nature. Perth also has excellent public transport and accessible facilities at the campus, which help me balance my studies and daily life. Additionally, the multicultural atmosphere allows me to meet people from different backgrounds, enriching my experience both socially and academically.

Do you have any advice for students who are considering studying a course similar to yours at TAFE?

My advice for students considering a course like mine at TAFE is to be open-minded and ready to learn both in the classroom and through practical experience. Take full advantage of the hands-on training and ask questions, as this will help you build confidence and real skills. Time management and staying organised are also very important in balancing studies and personal life. I would definitely recommend TAFE to my family and friends. The supportive lecturers, practical learning opportunities, and friendly campus environment make it a great choice for anyone who wants to pursue community services or similar courses. It is a place where you not only gain knowledge but also develop the compassion and skills needed to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I would like to share how grateful I am for the opportunity to study in Australia. This experience has not only helped me grow academically but also personally, allowing me to build confidence and independence in a new environment. Studying at TAFE has given me practical skills that I am excited to use to support vulnerable people in my community.

I am especially motivated by my own life story and challenges, which inspire me to help others facing similar difficulties. I believe education is a powerful tool to create positive change, and I am committed to making the most of this opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society both here and back home in the Philippines.
