Why choose this course?

Embark on a dynamic career in the automotive technology field. Get hands on with our practical training to diagnose, analyse, evaluate, design and modify automotive electrical and mechanical systems.

You will gain the skills to identify faults in braking systems, fuel systems, transmission and driveline systems and steering and suspension systems, and decide on the best course of action to repair these issues using environmentally sustainable work practices. On completion you will also be able to develop and document specifications and procedures, and overhaul engines and associated engine components.

Completing this course will give you the knowledge and some of the skills of an automotive mechanic, however you will not receive a trade certificate or be able to work as a fully qualified mechanic without achieving the provisional skills assessment requirements of Trades Recognition Australia.   • An IELTS score (academic) of 6.0 with no band score less than 5.0 or equivalent.

  • Completion of AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis is required for entry into this course.

Material fees are for items that remain your property after the course has been completed e.g. personal protective equipment, tools, text books etc. You pay this fee to your college at enrolment.

Work placement

There is no work placement requirement for this course.

To achieve this qualification, students must demonstrate competency in all 12 units listed below. These 12 units are comprised of 1 core unit and 11 elective units. Elective units have been selected in consultation with industry.

Students who enrol into this qualification will be eligible for credit transfer of the units that they have already achieved. Fees paid by international students are set on a commercial basis and are paid as a whole of course fee - no refund will apply to credit transfers. The methods of assessment used in this course include research assignments, and theory and practical assessments. Research assignments need to be completed in your own time, however the theory and practical assessments are carried out on-campus in allocated classrooms and workshops.

These assessment strategies and evidence gathering are in accordance with the relevant training package or accreditation guidelines. Detailed Information is available in the assessment matrix, learning plans and assessment tools for each of the units of competency. Assessors use this matrix to ensure assessments, are undertaken across the duration of the course, rather than clustered together at particular times.

Facilities and equipment may include use of automotive servicing equipment used to service manual and automatic transmissions, cooling systems, steering systems, and general engine repairs and servicing. Mechanical tools, overhaul equipment, hoists and measuring tools are accessible in the simulated automotive mechanic workshops situated at the campus.

Facilities and equipment may include the use of simulated automotive mechanical workshops situated on campus, and automotive servicing equipment relating to wheel balance and wheel alignment, hoists, general servicing, manual trans R&R and overhaul, final drive R&R and overhaul, automatic transmission service, repair and overhaul, engine repair and reconditioning tools, disc and drum machining facility, measuring tools (mechanical & electrical), cooling system repairs, clutch alignment and replacement, suspension adjustment and repair, exhaust repair, engine tune & diagnosis, general electrical tools, brake bleeding and repair and EFI & engine management tools.
